At each stage the work can be saved to the CC libraries via the window menu libraries. You can export the work for use in After Effects and many other applications. You can manipulate the generated cell designs in all kinds of ways such as adding additional effects such as stamp or using the result as a source for awesome 3D models.

You can create the circular selection by holding down the shift key when using the elliptical marquee tool. You can then fill the design with a gradient via the gradient tool. The gradient needs to be set to normal blending mode and radial type. Apply the gradient from a start position slightly to the top right and drag to the edge of the selection or beyond. That is the basic Photoshop sphere. You can then edit menu and copy the sphere design and paste (you can also drag the design into the CC library to store it for future use). You can also convert this into a smart object via the layer menu and smart objects and convert.
